What to Do When You Feel Stuck?
We’ve all been there: that frustrating, overwhelming sense of being stuck, in a rut. Whether it’s in your career, leadership role or personal life, feeling stuck can zap your energy and motivation. BUT here’s the good news - it’s a natural part of growth, and with the right approach, it can be the starting point for new momentum.
In my work with leaders and teams, I’ve helped exhausted people navigate these moments. Here are five strategies to help you break through when you’re feeling stuck.
1. Pause and reflect
It’s tempting to push harder when you feel stuck, but sometimes, the most productive thing you can do is pause. Take a step back and ask yourself:
What’s causing me to feel this way?
What’s truly important to me right now?
What’s within my control to change?
Talking with a trusted mentor (like me!) can help you identify the root of the issue. Often, clarity comes when you create space to think rather than forcing a solution.
2. Reframe the problem
Feeling stuck often stems from focusing too much on what’s wrong. Try flipping the script by asking:
What’s one positive thing I’ve learned from this situation?
What opportunities could this challenge create?
Shifting your mindset doesn’t make the problem disappear, but it can change how you approach it. When you focus on possibilities instead of obstacles, you open the door to creative solutions.
3. Reconnect with your strengths
One of the quickest ways to move forward is to focus on what you’re naturally good at. Strength Psychology - a cornerstone of my work - shows that when people take action based on their unique talents, they feel more energised and confident.
Ask yourself:
When have I felt at my best in the past?
How can I use my strengths to tackle this situation?
Leaning into your strengths doesn’t just boost your confidence - it provides a clear path forward.
4. Break it down into small steps
Big challenges can feel paralysing, but breaking them into smaller, actionable steps makes them manageable. Instead of thinking about the entire mountain you need to climb, focus on the first step.
For example:
If you’re stuck in your career, schedule an informational chat with someone in a role you admire.
If you’re stuck on a project, set a timer for 15 minutes and tackle just one task.
Progress, no matter how small, builds momentum.
5. Seek outside perspective
Sometimes, we’re too close to the problem to see the way out. This is where reaching out to a mentor, coach or a trusted colleague can make a world of difference.
In my 1:1 sessions, I often help clients uncover solutions they couldn’t see on their own. A fresh perspective can help you reframe challenges, identify blind spots, and create a plan tailored to your situation.
Embrace the moment of being stuck…
Here’s something to remember: feeling stuck isn’t a failure - it’s a signal that it’s time to grow or change. It’s a natural part of evolving, and with the right tools and mindset, it can lead to breakthroughs you never thought possible.
