How to Boost Energy and Productivity in Your Team
As a leader, one of your key responsibilities is to ensure your team operates at their best - with energy, motivation, and productivity. But let’s be honest: that’s easier said than done. Every team has its ups and downs, and maintaining a high-energy, high-output environment takes intentional effort.
Having worked with leaders and teams from companies like Deloitte, Bentley Motors, and The Estée Lauder Companies Inc., I’ve seen the direct link between energy and productivity - and how the right strategies can drive both. Here’s what I’ve learned about unlocking your peoples’ ultimate performance…
1. Prioritise strengths over weaknesses
One of the fastest ways to energise a team is to focus on what they’re already great at. Strength Psychology, a core part of my work, is all about leveraging people’s unique talents to maximise engagement and performance.
When people spend more time working in areas they naturally excel in, they feel more confident and motivated - and results show it. Instead of worrying about “fixing” weaknesses, ask yourself:
“How can I set my team up to shine by playing to their strengths?”
2. Create a culture of autonomy
Micromanaging is the ultimate energy drain. Instead, give your team the freedom to make decisions, take ownership of their work and find solutions their way.
When leaders trust their people, it fosters creativity, innovation and a sense of accountability. It's so uplifting to be told “I trust you.”
Productivity thrives when employees feel they have the autonomy to do their job and are trusted to deliver.
3. Communicate with clarity and purpose
Energy drops when teams are unsure of their direction or priorities. As a leader, your role is to clearly articulate the vision, set clear expectations, and ensure everyone understands their part in your big picture.
When people know where they’re heading and why it matters, they’ll naturally feel more driven to contribute.
Bonus tip: check in regularly to align goals and address any roadblocks - they’ll appreciate your clarity.
4. Recognise wins, big and small
Nothing fuels energy like feeling valued. Take time to acknowledge achievements - whether it’s a big project milestone or someone’s creative solution to a tricky problem.
Recognition doesn’t always have to be grand; a simple thank you, a quick shoutout in a meeting, or a thoughtful email or handwritten card can make all the difference. When people feel appreciated, they’re more likely to stay engaged and productive.
5. Support wellbeing without the fluff
Productivity starts with people feeling their best. This isn’t about offering vague wellness programmes or generic perks - it’s about taking meaningful steps to support your team’s physical and mental health.
Encourage breaks, set realistic workloads, and truly listen when someone needs help. A team that feels supported will always have more energy to give.
6. Inject fun into the work day
Let’s face it: productivity doesn’t thrive in dull environments. A little laughter, a creative icebreaker or an impromptu team celebration can work wonders for morale.
Injecting moments of lightheartedness into the workday not only energises people but also strengthens team bonds. I’m a big fan of comedy, and have completed 2 stand-up comedy courses. When people enjoy the process, we are more motivated to tackle challenges together.
7. Lead by example
Your team takes their cues from you. If you’re constantly stressed, unavailable or disengaged, it’s going to ripple through your team. On the flip side, if you show up with energy, purpose and a willingness to listen, it sets the tone for everyone else.
Being an energising leader doesn’t mean being relentlessly upbeat - it means being intentional in how you show up. Model behaviours you want to see, and watch how your team follows suit.
Bringing it all together…
Boosting energy and productivity isn’t about quick fixes or gimmicks - it’s about creating an environment where people feel valued, focused, and excited to contribute. By playing to strengths, fostering autonomy, recognising wins, and supporting wellbeing, you’ll develop a team that’s not just productive but uplifted.
